The opening of the Southaven Park Disc Golf Course marked the creation of a new public recreation destination within one of Long Island’s most storied landscapes. Located within Southaven County Park along the Carmans River, the course introduced a new chapter in the park’s history while building on decades of local lore, outdoor recreation, and community stewardship.
The artwork draws inspiration from one of Long Island’s most enduring urban legends: the reported UFO crash said to have occurred in Southaven Park in November 1992. According to local accounts, witnesses reported unusual lights over the park, followed by rumors of a crash, military activity, and a government recovery operation. While never substantiated, the story became part of Long Island folklore and remains one of the region’s most well-known UFO legends. Southaven Park itself is often referenced as the location of the alleged incident.
